SPECIAL EVENTS:
Join us for Live Jazz every Friday in the Lounge at the
Putney Inn!
Green Mountain Mambo will be performing at the Lounge at the
Putney Inn on Friday nights at 7:00 p.m. Band members Dan DeWalt and
Steve Sonntag play a combination of standard and original jazz and
Latin jazz music. The band performs original compositions by pianist
Dan DeWalt and trumpet/flugelhorn player Steve Sonntag. DeWalt has
been performing regionally for the past 30 years on trombone and steel
pan as well as piano. His venues have included the Clinton White House
and the Newfane Common.
Steve Sonntag is a member of the Amherst Jazz Orchestra, the Jeff
Holmes Big Band, the VJC Big Band and the Al Alessi Band. He currently
is a music professor at Westfield State College and at University of
Massachusetts at Amherst.
The other half of the horn section is anchored Clayton DeWalt, a
rising star in the trombone world, who is currently based in Boston,
MA and Pittsburgh, PA. Clayton DeWalt started recording professionally
in his early teens and comfortably plays jazz, classical, rock, R&B
and Afro-Caribbean. Toshiko Akiyoshi, Nancy Wilson, Cecil McBee, The
New York Voices, the Jimmy Sorsey Orchestra, the Gene Krupa Orchestra,
Bob Moses, Dave Samuels, Patrizio Buanne, The Temptations, and Regis
Philbin are just a few of the various artists he has played with. He
can be heard on recordings with The New York Voices (MCG Jazz), The
Three Rivers Jazz Orchestra (Sea Breeze Records), Catro, Azucar, and
others.
Dave DeWalt is currently pursuing his M.M. in Jazz Studies at the New
England Conservatory of Music and earned his B.S. in Music Education
from Slippery Rock University.
The rhythm section features Wim Auer on bass, along with either Julian
Gerstin on congas or Ben James on the drums.
Wim Auer first met Dan DeWalt and Draa Hobbs in 1980 when he returned
from England and performed with Prime Rib Band and he has been
performing with extensively with them since. Auer initially played
electric bass with Antares, a regional jazz collective, through the
1970s.
Julian Gerstin’s percussive explorations have led him from the folk
traditions of Ghana and Cuba to popular music from Nigeria to Brazil,
as well as jazz styles from New Orleans brass bands to avant-garde
experimentalism. He currently performs with the Caribbean/Mideastern
jazz group As Yet Quintet, Afro-Cuban dance ensemble GrupoPalo Santo,
Cajun band Lil’ Orphans (on washboard!), Brattleboro’s Brass Band
Project and accompanies the Brattleboro Women’s Chorus, River Singers
and others. Gerstin teaches music at Keene State College and the
Vermont Jazz Center (where he also serves on the board), as well as
community percussion classes at the Loft.
Percussionist Ben James is familiar to many since he grew up in
Guilford, VT playing drums and continued playing during his moves to
Boston, New York, and San Francisco before coming back to the
northeast. He currently plays drums and percussions throughout the
region with various music groups.
